Thrifty Tip: DIY Picture Frame Bow Holder

$

There must be something in the air right now because I have been to 4 baby showers in the past 2 months!  Baby showers are great but they can get expensive when so many of your loved ones are having babies.

I haven’t been worried because I have the PERFECT (and most thrifty!) present for all of the new baby girls in my life.  Using materials in my house, I make the cutest bow holder out of an old picture frame.  It’s practical and still so much fun to make and to give!  Here’s how I do it.

Need a cheap baby shower gift? Look no further than right here! WIth things you have around your house you could be ready for the party in no time! With just four items needed you can make and organize your bows!

How to Make a Bow Holder Using an Old Picture Frame.

All the items you need to make your own bow organizer

Items Needed: An old picture frame, ribbon, spray paint, decorative nails or hooks

Hammer nails into picture frame for decorative look!

1. Remove the glass from the picture frame.  Lightly hammer in decorative nails or hooks onto the frame.  Make sure you use the oldest hammer you can get your hands on for good luck…or because it’s the only hammer you could find.

Paint an old frame to make a bow organizer

2. Take your frame outside and spread newspaper to protect the ground–or the leaves if it is like my yard right now!  Spray paint the front of your frame paying special attention to the decorative nails.  Let it dry for about 45 minutes on that side.  Then spray paint the other side of the frame and let the frame dry for 45 minutes.

Glue Ribbon onto frame to make your own bow holder

3. Once the frame is completely dry, use a glue gun to add ribbon to the back of the frame.  Don’t accidentally glue your finger to the ribbon.  I have heard some people do that–not me though ESPECIALLY not in this picture.

4. If you are giving it for a gift, add on flower bows to the ribbon and hang elastic headbands from the nails.  If it’s for yourself, find an empty wall to hang it and then accessorize!

It could not have been easier or cheaper, right?  I can’t wait to attend my next baby shower with this present in tow!

SO simple to make your own bow organizer at home with just a few items!

Kid-Friendly and Cheap Christmas Treats

There are many sacred traditions in my family over the holiday season. We put up the tree together. We sing carols together. I am sure we even deck the halls together…not that I really know what that means but if it’s associated with Christmas, I am sure we do it!

My favorite tradition of them all: making Christmas treats as a family.  Seriously.

Now it wasn’t always so enjoyable until I changed my recipes so that my kids could help me make the treats and that the ingredients didn’t blow our budget.  What more could you want during the holidays than kid-friendly and cheap Christmas treats?!

Make Christmas treats with your kids without breaking the bank!

My Top Kid-Friendly and Cheap Christmas Treats

1 -Dipped pretzels

Cheap and Kid-Friendly Treats

Cheap Christmas Treats

Ingredients – Pretzel Rods, Vanilla Almond Bark, Assorted Toppings

Melt 4 ounces of vanilla almond bark in a bowl.  Holding onto the top of the pretzel rod, dip all but 2 inches into the vanilla almond bark.  Use a spoon to get any hard-to-reach spots.  Once covered hold the pretzel rods upside down and let the chocolate run down back into the bowl.  Immediately, top the melted almond bark with toppings like coconut, melted milk chocolate, sprinkles or mini-chocolate chips.  You can also roll them in toppings for full coverage.  Lay them on a sheet of parchment paper to completely dry.  If you are in a hurry (or just really hungry!) let them harden in the fridge for about 15 minutes!

2 - Peanut butter balls

Cheap and Kid-Friendly Treats
Ingredients – Smooth Peanut Butter, Powdered Sugar, Butter, Chocolate Almond Bark

Melt 6 Tablespoons of butter in a medium bowl and add in 1 cup of smooth peanut butter.  Stir until combined.  Add in 2 cups powdered sugar and combine the ingredients.  Place in the fridge for 10 minutes.  Roll the peanut butter mixture into 1-inch balls and lay on a cookie sheet.  Melt 8 ounces of chocolate almond bark or milk chocolate.  Dip the balls into chocolate.  Use two spoons to cover the balls completely and then use a toothpick to remove it from the chocolate.  Place it on parchment paper until the chocolate is set.  Then it’s ready to eat!

3 – Peppermint White Chocolate Popcorn

Kid-Friendly and Cheap Christmas Treats
Ingredients – Popcorn, Crushed Peppermints, Almond Bark

Cover a baking pan with foil or wax paper; set aside.  Crush 2 Tablespoons peppermint candies either in a ziploc or a small chopper/food processor so they are close to powder.  Pop popcorn (13 cups popped) and remove the old maids–the unpopped seeds.  Use a cookie rack on a baking sheet and just dump the popcorn on top of that for easy removal.  Melt chocolate in a double boiler over barely simmering water, stirring until smooth OR melt 6 ounces almond bark in a microwaveable bowl — 1 minute, stir, 30 seconds, stir until melted.  Place popcorn in a medium sized bowl and spoon the almond bark over the popcorn and toss with two spoons to get equal coverage.  Start with a couple spoonfuls and then toss it together.   You don’t want the popcorn to get damp or soggy.  Sprinkle in the crushed peppermints and stir so all the popcorn is minted.  Spread onto prepared pan.  Let the popcorn dry completely.  When the chocolate is cooled and set, break into chunks for serving.  Store in an air-tight container at room temperature.

4 – Andes Mini Brownies

Kid-friendly and Cheap Treats
Ingredients – Brownie Mix, Andes Mints

Place disposable liners in a mini-muffin pan.  Make a batch of your favorite brownie mix.  This is my go-to recipe but feel free to use any mix you want!  Fill the cups about 2/3 full.  Chop up a box of Andes Mints (4.67 ounces).  Sprinkle 3/4 of the Andes Mints on top of the uncooked brownie batter.  Bake as directed.  After pulling them out of the oven, sprinkle the last 1/3 of the Andes mints on top of the brownies.  Enjoy!

5 – Chocolate Marshmallows

 Kid-Friendly and Cheap Christmas Treats
Ingredients – Large Marshmallows, Vanilla Almond Bark, Chocolate Almond Bark, Peppermints

Place a large marshmallow on a wooden kabob stick.  You could use straws for the little ones!  Melt 3 ounces of almond bark and place in a bowl.  Dip the marshmallows in one at a time in the almond bark using a spoon to spread and also to help get rid of excess chocolate.  Immediately roll and sprinkle in 1/4 cup crushed peppermints until covered.  Lay the marshmallow on parchment paper and cover the other marshmallows.  Melt 1 ounce of milk chocolate in a ziploc bag in a bowl for 30 seconds and then squeeze it.  Repeat until melted.  When it is melted, cut a tiny hole in the corner and squiggle the melted chocolate over the peppermint marshmallow.  Allow to dry completely before eating on either parchment paper or standing up in a deep bowl or cup.

6 – Peppermint Bark

Cheap and Kid-Friendly Treats
Ingredients – Milk Chocolate, Vanilla Almond Bark, Peppermints

Line a 9×9 pan with parchment paper and set aside. Melt 4 ounces of milk chocolate over a double boiler (or in 30-second intervals in the microwave on 50% power, stirring after each time until it is fully melted. Once the chocolate is melted, remove from the heat and pour into the prepared pan.  Spread it evenly to create a solid layer.  Melt 4 ounces of vanilla almond bark.  Pour over the almond bark onto of the milk chocolate and spread it evenly over the top.  Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of crushed peppermints on top and press down lightly to push the mints into the top layer. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes until completely set or let it harden overnight. Remove the parchment paper from the pan and peel it off the bark.  Cut the bark or break into pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator. When stored in the refrigerator, it will keep for at least 2 weeks–if it lasts that long!

What are some of your family’s favorite Christmas treats?

Oooh La La! Homemade Hot Chocolate

The easiest and best tasting homemade hot chocolate recipe!

Some of my best memories from my childhood were days playing outside in the snow with my siblings.  We would stay out there for hours making snowmen,  snow angels and attempting to make an igloo or at least a really cool snow fort.  I can almost feel myself whizzing down the tiny hill across the street and landing with a big kah-rump in the snow!  It didn’t matter how cold it got because there was always something warm waiting for us when we got home – Homemade Hot Chocolate.  We would wrap our hands around a steaming mug of cocoa and talk about the adventures of our day.

Now that I am a mom I find myself making this same homemade hot chocolate for my kids while listening to their exploits of the snow day.  Thank goodness for this simple, frugal recipe or I think it could really take a hit to my budget.  Here is my recipe for homemade Hot Chocolate.

It's so easy and can save you money to make your own homemade hot chocolate recipe at home. This recipe is by far the most basic and tastes AMAZING!

My Thrifty Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe

Thrifty Homemade Hot Chocolate
Author:
Serves: 4 servings

Ingredients
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 4 cups milk (any kind, but I prefer whole milk)
Instructions
  1. Mix the cocoa powder and sugar together with a whisk in a medium saucepan. Add in 1 cup of milk. Heat on low while stirring until it is incorporated. Then add in the other 3 cups of milk and heat until desired temperature. Pour into cups and get ready to sit by the fire!

If you would prefer to have the  mix ready to go here is the recipe.

Servings: 32

  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 8 cups white sugar

Use 4 rounded Tablespoons of the mixture to 1 cup of milk.  Mix the dry ingredients and store in a lidded jar.  I like to write the directions on the front of it so I don’t forget.  It should last you all winter long…unless you share!

Additions to the Homemade Hot Chocolate

On special occasions – or when I actually get to plan for a snow day! – I have a couple tricks up my sleeve to spice up my homemade hot chocolate.

Freeze whipped cream into holiday shapes or in pretty little dollops with sprinkles on them to place on the hot cocoa.  It holds its form for a bit before dissolving into the liquid and creating an extra creamy flavor. Another addition I love to do is to use a small candy cane and add a marshmallow on the end.  The candy cane hangs on the mug’s rim while dunking the marshmallow in the hot liquid. It creates a wonderful chocolate-marshmallow flavor. My last tip is to add in a handful of chopped up Andes Mints.  It dissolves quickly and leaves a perfectly minty flavor in your cocoa.

Homemade Hot cocoa recipe that is to die for!

So the next snowy day instead of racing to the store to buy some cocoa mix try making this homemade hot chocolate!

4 WAYS to make your Lettuce LAST longer!

$

TOP 4 WAYS to make your lettuce last longer in your fridge!

Like most of the country my New Year’s resolutions always seem to focus on eating healthier.  And to me that means passing up a cheeseburger for more salads.  But does anyone else feel like they buy lettuce, use it for a couple days and then it turns kind of soggy to the point where it is REALLY easy to justify eating chocolate chip cookies instead of salad?  I think that happens to me at least once a week.

Or at least it did.  No more!  Now I have figured out the secret to keeping lettuce fresh.

Here are my ways to Keeping Lettuce Fresh and Crisp.

lettuce3

1.  Buy the freshest lettuce out there. Don’t grab the first one that you see.  Check the date first–even if you are going to eat it that day!  Fresh is best!  Make sure there are not any brown leaves or that there isn’t any water sitting in the packaging.  Wet lettuce = damp lettuce!

2. Store it properly. Take a couple minutes after you get home from the store to prolong the life of your lettuce.  First, take it out of its original packaging.  Wipe off any water sticking to the leaves.  If it is a tight head of lettuce gently try to dry the individual leaves as well as you can.  Moisture creates soggy lettuce.  Wrap it in a dishtowel or paper towels before putting it back into a plastic bag.  Maybe by doing that extra step you also won’t forget about it all the way down in your crisper drawer!

lettuce4

3. Wash your lettuce in cold water.  When you are ready to use your lettuce submerge your leafy greens into cold water.  Let them sit in the cold water for at least 15 minutes.  The cold water rehydrates the leaves—they are a plant after all!—and crisps them up.

lettuce2

4. Dry them properly.  When the time is up remove your lettuce.  Give it a final rinse if the water was dirty.  To dry the lettuce I am impatient and put it in a salad spinner.  If you don’t have one, never fear.  Just lay the leaves out on towel or paper towels and gently pat them to absorb the water.

At this point the lettuce is the freshest and crispest you can get so get ready to eat!

lettuce5

If you have any extra lettuce once it is mostly dry wrap the extra leaves in a towel or paper towel and store in a plastic bag.  This will prolong the life of your lettuce and help you reach your New Year’s goal!

20 Things to Do With Eggshells

20 Things to do with Eggshells

Eggs are a great source of protein, they’re full of vitamins and minerals and hey, they taste good too. But once you crack the shell and fry up them eggs, what good is the shell but tossing it in the trash? A lot more than you’d think.   I am still playing the waiting game for my first eggs from my chickens, but in the mean time I am saving egg shells from my store-bought eggs.

Here are 20 Things to Do with Eggshells that you might not know about.

  1. Composting:  Eggshells are rich in calcium with about 750 to 800 mg of calcium in each medium eggshell. Eggshells include lots of other nutrients that are great for plants. Just crush or grind them up and add to your compost.
  2. Fertilizer: Along the same lines, you can crush eggshells and sprinkle them into a hole right before planting to fertilize the soil. Then every two weeks, crush eggshells and sprinkle them around the base of your plants.
  3. Prevent blossom end rot: Tomatoes and cucumbers are especially susceptible to blossom end rot. Sprinkle crushed eggshell around the vegetables to prevent this and provide some calcium carbonate.
  4. Seedling starters: Need a place to grow seedlings? Take an eggshell, rinse, add a hole on bottom for drainage and crack the other end. Fill this end with dirt and one to two seeds. Once they’re ready to be planted, just crack the eggshell at the bottom and plant the young plant along with the shell.
  5. Pest control: Crush eggshells around vegetables and flowers to keep away snails, slugs and cutworms because they don’t like crawling over the shell. Should keep cats from using your garden as a litter box too.
  6. Fertilize indoor plants: Just as with your garden, eggshells are a great way to keep your indoor plants healthy. Add the shells to a container of tepid water. Put in a cool, dark place overnight and then add the water to your plants.
  7. Cleaning dishes: Use eggshells to clean pots and pans that are tough to clean. They work wonderfully as an abrasive.
  8. Clean vases:  Vases can be hard to clean since they’re so tall and slender.  Just rinse the vase with warm water, add a few crushed eggshells, fill with warm water, and then add a drop of dishwashing soap. Shake and rinse thoroughly.
  9. Remove coffee and tea stains: Have a mug that is stained, no matter how you scrub? Add in some ground up eggshells, drop them in the mug and add warm water. Let sit overnight, letting the eggshells absorb the stain.
  10. Whiten laundry: Just stick some eggshells in a mesh bag in your laundry and your white clothes will lose their grayish tint. I haven’t tried this myself. Has anyone tried this? Did it work?
  11. Feed them to chickens: Laying hens need lots of calcium and often need supplements in order to get that calcium. Calcium deficient hens lead to thin-shelled (and possibly shell-less) eggs.
  12. Homemade calcium supplement: Clean and sanitize the eggshells, let them dry, and then blend them to powder using a blender or coffee grinder. Spoon them into gelatin capsules or add them to smoothies for the extra calcium and other health benefits.
  13. Pet calcium supplement: You’re not the only one that can benefit from egg shell. Your pets can also use a calcium boost. Just add sterilized, ground eggshells to your pets’ food.
  14. Make homemade sidewalk chalk: This is definitely something to try for the kids. Grind up 5-8 shells, add 1 tsp of hot water, 1 tsp of flour, and food coloring. Mix together and then pack into toilet rolls till dried. Sounds like lots of fun!
  15. Coffee additive: Try adding an eggshell to the filter in the coffee maker. It will take some of the bitterness out of the coffee flavor and what’s left over in the filter is perfect for adding to your compost.
  16. Coloring: Rather than hard boiling eggs and coloring them, use the blow out method to remove the egg yolk. You can then color the eggshells.
  17. Eggshell mosaics: You can leave your colored shells be, or consider taking the colored shells, crushing them, and creating a beautiful mosaic. All you need are colored shells, card stock, a design, glue and tweezers.
  18. Gelatin molds: Want a clever gelatin dessert? Use eggshells as a gelatin mold. It can also be used to create egg-shaped chocolate treats. Just pour in some melted chocolate.
  19. Facials: Use a mortar and pestle to grind the egg shells (or I assume a blender would work as well) and then mix with egg whites. This makes a great facial, but be sure to let the mixture dry completely before you rinse it off.
  20. Use as a bandage: The membrane inside eggshells is perfect for bandages. Crack the egg, swipe some membrane, wrap it around the cut and let it harden.

Do you have any fun uses for eggshells? I’d love to hear about them!

Thrifty Tip: Freezing Green Onions in Plastic Bottles

happymoneysaver.com| Who knew you could freeze green onions? This is so awesome!

When I am gearing up for a day to stock my freezer with meals, I try to be prepared by cutting up most of my ingredients before the actual day and storing them in my fridge.  That’s a great timesaver, right?

Until you open the fridge and WHAM!  Strong onion vapors hit you like a ton of bricks!  You swiftly slam the doors shut but you know it’s in there lurking, festering and flavoring all the other food around it.  Instead of avoiding opening the fridge, here is a great solution so you can stay prepared and also keep the smelly onions at bay. I do this by freezing green onions in empty bottles.

happymoneysaver.com| Who knew you could freeze green onions? This is so awesome!

Thrifty Tip: Freezing Green Onions in Reused Plastic Bottles

First, you need to raid your recycling bin for an empty plastic water bottle.  Peel off the labels and clean it in hot, soapy water.  Let it dry completely.  Or if you are impatient like I am, get out your blow dryer and dry it in about a minute.  It must be as dry as can be because the moisture will freeze onto the onions.

Once the bottle is ready, chop up your green onions into the size you would like to eat and add them into your bottle.  You may need a funnel to get them in–or do as I do, and roll a piece of wax paper into a funnel shape to add them in!  Screw the lid on, keeping the onions and their smelly goodness inside the bottle and toss them into your freezer in the back where nothing else usually fits.  Then when you need the onions, reach back, grab the bottle, unscrew the lid and shake them into your recipe.  I love to use this method when I make casseroles, quiches or to add to my enchiladas.

happymoneysaver.com| Who knew you could freeze green onions? This is so awesome!

Any size bottle will work for this.  I prefer to use the small plastic water bottles because they fit nicely in my freezer and are easy to grab when I need them. You could even use a glass bottle if you don’t like to use plastic.  Both contain the smell and keep them fresh.  They last in the freezer for one month.

Nothing better than finding a simple solution to a really smelly problem. I love this simple easy tip of freezing green onions, don’t you?

Thrifty Tip: 10 Ways to Use Baking Soda Daily

happymoneysaver.com| Who knew there were so many uses for baking soda daily. What a great list!

Baking soda is one of those things we all have in our home.  For some it is used often for cooking and for others it is shoved somewhere in their fridge hoping to keep the leftovers smells at bay.  I think I can honestly claim both of those.

But I bet you didn’t realize all the versatile ways you can use baking soda daily throughout your house.  Baking soda may look like a fine powder but it really is a chemical compound that releases bubbles of carbon dioxide when it interacts with an acid and a liquid. In baking it is as a leavening agent to make your bread and cakes fluffy.  But it is also a great cleaner around the home and is so affordable!  Who knows?  It may make you think twice when see that little box in your pantry.

Here are 10 Ways to use Baking Soda Daily.

happymoneysaver.com| Who knew there were so many uses for baking soda daily. What a great list!

1. Clean your toilets.  Put a cup of baking soda in the toilet.  Let it sit for an hour and then flush.  It cleans the toilet and gets rid of any odors without any scrubbing.

2. Wash your hairbrushes.  Over time there can be build up of oil and hair products on your brushes.  Soak your hair brushes in 1 cup of warm water and 1 teaspoon of baking soda.  Rinse with clean water.  Leave it on the counter to dry.

3. Facial Cleanser. Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to your usual facial cleanser or even just coconut oil and form a paste. Massage into your skin in circular motions to help exfoliate and leave skin feeling soft.  I do this about once a week and I swear it makes my face glow!

4. Clean crayons off of walls.  Apply baking soda to a slightly damp cloth and rub lightly.  Then use a dry cloth to clean off the crayon marks.  Yes, I know this works from personal experience.

5. Get rid of the itchy bug bites.  Make a paste out of baking soda and water.  I usually use about 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 1/2 teaspoon of water.  Apply it on the bug bite. The itchiness and redness is eased!

6. Remove oil and grease stains on your garage floor.  It’s inevitable that sometimes the garage floor is going to be dirty.  Simply sprinkle baking soda directly on it, let it absorb as much as it can and then scrub with a wet brush.

7. Baking powder substitute. In cooking  it can be used as a substitute for baking powder by mixing it with cream of tartar or vinegar.  I love being able to substitute crucial ingredients when I run out of them which happens a lot lately!

8. Scrub your tubs.  I hate to use harsh chemicals when I know we are at our most vulnerable!  Baking soda, a little water and a hand brush cleans and deodorizes your tubs in minutes!

9. Relieves sunburns.  Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to a warm bath.  Soak for at least 15 minutes in it to soothe the sunburn.  If you don’t have time for a bath combine baking soda and water and apply it to your skin with a washcloth or soaked cotton balls.

10. Neutralize your breath.  Sometimes you run out of mouthwash right before a hot date.  No worries!  Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Swish it, spit it and rinse.  It’s an easy, inexpensive mouthwash to keep your breath fresh!

Do you have any special ways that you use baking soda in your home?

5 Things I Do BEFORE I Shop Online

5 tips to shopping online

Why pay more when you can get it for less?  This mantra has been running through my DNA since before I was born. Lately, it’s more important than ever as I have been mastering the art of online shopping.  You can save as much as 50 to 60% on an online purchase if you just know the 5 tips for shopping online. Here are my secrets.

5 THINGS I DO BEFORE SHOPPING ONLINE

1 – Read Reviews.  Most of the time I know what I want to buy BUT I’m not sure about which brand I should choose.  That’s where reviews come in handy.  Amazon has great personal reviews that help me narrow down the choice to the best models and brands.  I also use BluePromoCode.com’s insider blog posts to gather information for tips on the best products.

2 – Check for Coupons.  I love to use BluePromoCode.com for online coupons.  They have a 1 million coupon database supplying promo codes, shipping discounts and sales on over 40,000 stores making it easy to compare prices between brands.  They even verify their promo codes work with their new “Deal Verified” feature which gives screens-shot proof that a promo code is valid.

5 tips to shopping online

Recently, I was shopping for a new laptop and found through BluePromoCode.com that the same laptop was sold at 8 different stores at 8 different prices.  Thankfully, they had all the sales and promo codes from those stores available at my fingertips so I was able to make a well-informed decision on an expensive purchase.

BluePromoCode.com also offers a really cool feature where you can follow your favorite stores and get a daily email or a push alert with updates on all the sales and promo codes arranged in one message.  You can also get deals on specific products in one email, too, if you know what you are looking for.  This year it worked perfectly for my Christmas shopping.  I just waited for the sales to come to me instead of hours of research myself.  Talk about making the holidays less stressful!

3 – Buy Used if Possible.  Before buying a new item, it is best to see what the used price is.  I like to check Ebay or Craigslist before buying my products.  Sometimes it confirms the decision to buy new and other times I am able to get the deal of a century on a slightly-used item.

4 – Take Shipping Costs into Consideration.  Add the shipping costs into your total bill before purchasing an item to make sure you aren’t paying as much for shipping as you are for the product.  BluePromoCode.com offers lots of free shipping codes and can even sort the stores so you can shop ONLY at the ones with free shipping.  I also love Amazon Prime for quick two-day shipping where I don’t worry about the shipping prices at all.

5 – Be Patient.  There is a continuous cycle of online bargains and promotions.  If you have time to wait it out, you can keep watching for the right deal instead of the “right now” deal.

Use these 5 tips for shopping online and save money every time.  Do you have any secrets for shopping online?

How to Organize Closet Space on a Tight Budget

Have you ever seen the closet of a really wealthy person? Me neither.  But I have seen the closet of almost every Real Housewife on Bravo.  Every item of clothing has its own personalized home.  There are doors and compartments and sometimes even a beautiful chandelier.  Yeah, that’s not my closet. :)

My closet is full of disheveled clothes interspersed with empty wire, plastic and wood hangers. I have piles of sweaters and sweatshirts mixed along with my summer clothes that I tried to shove in the corner shelf.  Now before you judge me too much, I should tell you, this USED to be my closet.  I don’t have the money to make my closet as fabulous as a tv star’s but I have do have great tips on how to organize closet space on a tight budget.

happymoneysaver.com|I love these great tips on how to organize a closet. #organization

How to Organize Closet Space on a Tight Budget

  1. Keep an empty bin in your closet for empty hangers. This could be a box from Costco or the old laundry basket with the broken handle!  When you take an item of clothing off of the hanger,  place it in the bin.  It makes the hangers easy to find on laundry day and also keeps a cleaner look in your closet.
  2. Store your most-used items at eye level, less-used items below, and least-used items up high because let’s face it–no one likes to reach all the way up in the top of the closet in the morning!
  3. Do your dresses fall off the hangers like mine do?  An easy solution is to wrap pipe cleaners around your hangers so that your clothes don’t fall off.  Speaking of hangers shop at garage sales or second-hand stores for them.  I love having matching hangers but buying them can get expensive.  Buying them used is a great way to get them a bargain price.
  4. Use command hooks on your closet wall for purses, bags or even jewelry. These hooks are cheap and sturdy and help the purses keep their shape without being smashed against one another.
  5. Always keep a laundry bin in your closet. Then as you are changing your clothes they instantly go into the laundry bin—and not on the floor!
  6. Organize your clothes into categories. For example short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, dresses, etc.  This makes it easier to find what you are looking for on a busy day and also to stay organized when putting your laundry away.
  7. Get rid of old clothes no matter how attached you are to them.  You are never going to wear your old ratty high school basketball shirt so part ways and let it go.
  8. Add a lamp or battery-operated stick-on tap lights in those dark corners.  When your closet is well-lit you can make decisions faster and you are less likely to shove things in that dark corner.  C’mon we’ve all done that at least once…right?
  9. Make more room in your closet by storing out-of-season clothes in boxes up high or under the bed.  I love to save the bags that new comforters come in.  They are pliable and see through so you can see what clothes are stored in them in case you need to get an out-of-season item out of storage.  You can also use suitcases to store out-of-season clothes, blankets or sweaters.

Do you have any budget-friendly closet organization tips?

You don't need an expensive smoker to get the classic BBQ taste. You can make your own for about $0.75 to use on your gas grill! happymoneysaver.com

I am going to show you my thrifty homemade bbq smoker plans today. I LOVE my grill! In the summer I think I use it at least four times a week, and the only reason I don’t use it more is so my neighbors don’t think I’m a crazy lady! This summer I have a goal to up my grilling game, and part of my goal is to smoke more meat. However, I have never smoked meat before, so I want to gain a little experience with the process and see if it is for me before I go out and buy a $300 smoker. So if you want to join me this summer and improve your BBQ prowess, join me! These homemade bbq smoker plans are just what we need to get started!

Smoking on a gas grill is surprisingly easy! You can buy smoker boxes like this one, which are great! But many of them cost between $15-$25. I would rather make my own for about $0.75!

You will need:

You don't need an expensive smoker to get the classic BBQ taste. You can make your own for about $0.75 to use on your gas grill!

Let your wood chips soak for at least 2 hours (but overnight is best). This step is important because it allows the chips to smoke, and not just catch on fire and burn up.

Happymoneysaver | You don't need an expensive smoker to get the classic BBQ taste. You can make your own for about $0.75 to use on your gas grill!

Drain your wood chips and cover with aluminum foil. Poke holes in the top to allow the smoke to escape.

Now it’s time to put it on your grill. You want it directly over ONE heating element. Turn this heating element on high and leave the rest off. This should produce enough heat to keep your grill between 225 and 250 degrees, which is optimal smoking temperature for most meats. If this doesn’t really make sense, refer to the picture below.

diagram needed

I realize not everyones grill is set up this way. Some heating element run horizontally, and some may have fewer heating elements. However, the important thing to remember, is the smoker box goes over direct heat, and the meat should be over indirect heat (read: a burner that is turned off)

Turn your grill on and let it heat up the wood chips for about 10 minutes (you want to start seeing a little smoke) before you place your meat on.

Smoke for the recommended amount of time or until desired temperature of your meat is reached, and impress your husband with your awesome grilling/smoking skills. (But really, he will totally be impressed).

Disposable aluminum foil bread pan: $0.70
Sheet of aluminum foil: $0.05
Skewer, knife or fork to poke holes with: Free

That is only $0.75! Your average smoker box costs about $16.00, using our DIY smoker box you save 95%! I vote that this diy smoker hack is definitely worth it!

10 Ways to Use Tea- Outside of the Teacup

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Homesteading is all about finding natural, resourceful ways to accomplish everyday tasks, and there is no substance less pure and useful than tea. First discovered more than 4,500 years ago — according to Chinese legend — tea has been in peoples’ pantries for ages, and you better believe we have been doing more with the little leaves than just sipping them. Here are my 10 favorite alternative uses for tea that don’t require a sugar pot and cream.

10 Ways to use Tea Outside of the Teacup

1. Clean Wood

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Wood furniture and floors aren’t the easiest to take care of; harsh chemical cleaners often strip them of color and shine. Instead, you can brew a tea-based cleaner to keep them healthy and gleaming. Boil two teabags in a quart of water, and let it cool. Then, dip a soft cloth into the tea and wipe down any grime-covered wooden surfaces.

2. Deodorize Feet

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Some people have foot funk — that’s the way of life. However, you can save yourself from the foot smell by soaking your toes in a daily tea bath. About 20 minutes in lukewarm tea should relieve your tootsies of any lingering stench.

3. Dye Hair

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

If you’ve noticed a few strands of gray in your hair, you can hide them with this all-natural remedy:

  • Steep three teabags in a cup of boiling water, and add sage and rosemary (or your other favorite aromatic herbs).
  • Let the mixture sit overnight.
  • Shampoo your hair has usual, and then saturate your hair with the tea mixture by pouring or spraying.
  • Do not rinse your hair; instead, blot it dry with a towel.
  • Repeat as necessary to achieve desired results.

4. Feed Gardens

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Tea is healthy for plants, too. Burying new or used tea bags under soil and mulch in flowerbeds or pots encourages substantial plant growth. After a watering, the tea holds in water for the plants to drink and leeches its nutrients into soil to give plants a boost.

5. Freshen Carpets

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Carpets are effective at hiding hard use, but if yours are looking and smelling their age, you might want to cover them in a layer of green tea. Tea leaves attract dirt and soak up foul odors; all you have to do is sprinkle unused green tea leaves on your carpets, let them sit for about 10 minutes, and vacuum them up to have fresher carpets.

6. Make Soap

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Tea is wonderfully fragrant, which makes it an excellent additive to soaps. Many homesteaders are already confident making their own soaps, but if you are new to soap-making, you might want to pick up a soap starter kit. You will add your tea (and any essential oils you also want) once you’ve mixed together the soap base. The best thing about this trick is its versatility; you can try all sorts of different teas in your soaps for different looks and scents:

  •  Rosehip tea
  •  Hibiscus tea
  •  Juniper berry tea
  •  Anise seed tea
  •  Feverfew-lemongrass tea
  •  Wild cherry bark tea
  •  And more!

7. Paint

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Strongly brewed tea holds its color exceedingly well, and plenty of artists have experimented with it as a medium to create stunning pieces. All you need is a canvas, a brush, and a cup of tea, and you can have a wonderful work of art in no time.

8. Read Futures

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

I’ll admit this tea trick is less than scientific, but reading tea leaves is an incredibly fun, interactive activity. Add a pinch of loose tea leaves to a cup of tea, drain the tea, and analyze the leaves for pictures. Any images you find are said to be portents of future events!

9. Soothe Sunburns

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

Wet teabags have a cooling effect on skin, which can take the sting out of aching sunburns. If it was a long day at the beach and your whole body is lobster-red, you can steep the teabags in a bathtub for all-over relief. This trick works on other minor, first-degree burns, as well as nasty razor burn.

10. Tenderize Meat

10 Ways To Use Tea Outside of the Teacup - happymoneysaver.com

The toughest cuts of meat are often the cheapest, which makes them excellent budget-savers on shopping lists. Fortunately, if you have some tea in the cabinet, you don’t have to worry about wearing out your jaw. Simply pour a teapot-full of black tea over a seasoned cut of meat and bake it in a Dutch oven at 365 degrees Fahrenheit for about 90 minutes, and you will have everyone thinking you bought strip steak.

Tea is relaxing, rejuvenating, and delicious both inside the teacup and out. Most people don’t realize how versatile tea can be when it isn’t confined to a small, paper pouch. The next time you are ready to order more tea for your cupboard, you should consider all the other ways to use this curious natural cure-all around the house — and stock up on a little extra than usual.

Lena Cup: A Great Money Saver for that Time of the Month

$

I don't like to talk about this topic much but all ladies who love to save money need to know about the Lena Cup for periods. Cost around $25 and will last YEARS if well taken care of. No more spending hundreds a year on other supplies.

I like to pride myself in knowing about the newest and coolest products. And when I learn about them I love to shout it from the rooftops. Now this product is different because I am a little shy/mortified/dying of embarrassment to talk about our monthly friend face-to-face but I want everyone to know about how LENA cups have changed my monthly nightmare into a manageable week.

I know that talking about periods is probably not your favorite subject. It’s not mine either but let’s face it—it’s a fact of life. It happens every month and it doesn’t go away with any amount of prayers that you may offer.

I know. I’ve tried.

My most awkward moment as a teen (maybe ever!) involved me buying tampons at the self-checkout station and not being able to scan in the tampons. Needless to say the only person that could help me was the cutest checkout boy in the store–of course. To say I was embarrassed was an understatement! Please say we all have had an experience like this!!

I don't like to talk about this topic much but all ladies who love to save money need to know about the Lena Cup for periods. Cost around $25 and will last YEARS if well taken care of. No more spending hundreds a year on other supplies.

LENA cups definitely help with those situations because you can order them online and have them shipped directly to your door!  They are also registered with the FDA and made in the good old US of A–California to be exact!  But those aren’t the only reasons why I like LENA cups. The Lena Cup is amazing! Read my review on it here.

Here are some other game-changing reasons to switch to a LENA Cup!

LIFE SPAN – One of the best parts about the LENA cups is the life span of the product. With proper care these things can last for years! One item to capture all the icky mess of your period for years is perfect for what I need.

MONEY – It’s a money saver’s dream! I was spending over $100 on feminine hygiene products each year and now for under $25 you can get the LENA cup for all of your needs for years!

ENVIRONMENT – Just a small plug for the earth, too! In addition to not spending money on the products, they say that every year 20 billion pads, tampons, applicators and their packaging end up in American landfills. I don’t want to contribute to that but I mean, we need protection! With the LENA cup I don’t have to be a part of the problem.

TIME – You can keep these babies in for up to 12 hours! I can finally sleep in something that I don’t have to set an alarm for to change early in the morning. It is also great for the long days where you are busy running around to not worry about bringing an extra tampon with you during the day.  The best part is for traveling though.  You don’t need to cart a big box of tampons around.

The Lena Cup is so small it will fit into a purse or small bag for on the go emergencies.

Now there were a couple parts of the LENA Cup that did make me nervous at the beginning. First, I was worried about insertion. After taking the LENA cup out of the box my eyes were really wide at how THAT was going to fit in my body. Don’t let that stop you!

My Lena Cup REVIEW!! I love it. I don't like to talk about this topic much but all ladies who love to save money need to know about the Lena Cup for periods. Cost around $25 and will last YEARS if well taken care of. No more spending hundreds a year on other supplies.

You fold it in half and then fold it again so it looks like a little flower and it slides right in! I was so surprised and how easily it fit and expanded into place.

I did yoga with it in, showered and spent the day chasing after my kids. I completely forgot that it was there! Before bed I took it out, emptied it in the toilet and rinsed it out and put it back in for the night. The whole process took less than 3 minutes.

I do recommend that you do it for the first time in the privacy of your own home. There is a learning curve that until you feel comfortable with cleaning it and putting it back in, you will want to be someplace private where you won’t be rushed for time or in a public arena!

They also have two sizes so that you can choose which one works best for you. The small felt more comfortable to me but I kept the large for if I needed it for a heavy flow month.

If saving money, saving time and most of all eliminating embarrassing trips to the grocery store are your thing, LENA cups are for you, too!
